SIGISMUND
c.1368 - 1437
German Emperor

Sigismund, the son of emperor Charles IV, was the last emperor of the House of Luxemburg. He was king of Hungary, Germany, Bohemia and Lombardy. He led a European army against the Turks in Serbia but was defeated in 1396.

In 1415 Sigismund convoked the Council of Constance in order to settle the schism between three different popes. As a result of the burning of the Czech reformer Jan Huss , whom the king had invited to Constance to defend his views, Sigismund became entangled in the Hussite wars in Bohemia.

In 1431 he went to Italy where he was finally crowned Holy Roman emperor only four years before he died.
