Alexander Nevsky
c.1220 - 1263
Prince of Novgorod
Alexander Nevsky was a military commander who defended Russia against all attacks from Sweden - but he was forced to cooperate with the superior Mongol armies in the South.

A noble by birth, Alexander was chosen prince of Novgorod. After defeating the Swedes (1240) and the Teutonic Knights (1242) he collaborated with the Mongols. He became grand prince of Vladimir, and unified the fragmented principalities of northern Russia.
