CHARLES II the Bald
823 - 877
King of the West Frankish kdm

Charles' father, Louis the Pious, ruled the Frankish realm as successor to Charlemagne. In a long and complicated family dispute the Frankish kingdom was eventually divided by the Treaty of Verdun into Middle, Eastern and Western kdms.

The Middle kdm was soon partitioned again. Louis, the German received the  East, and Charles, the Bald the  West (France). His lands suffered from raids by Normans, who left only after receiving bribes.

In 875 Charles went to Italy where he was crowned emperor by the pope. The West Frankish kdm slowly dissolved after Charles death, it re-emerged hundred years later as the Kdm of France under the Capetians.
