Aristides was an able general and founder of the Delian League which made Athens the leading power in Greece.

He was ostracized in 482 because he opposed Themistocles plan to build a large fleet against the Persians.

Recalled in 480 he distinguished himself in the victory over the Persians at Salamis and commanded the Gk army at the battle of Plataea.
