Saint PACHOMIUS
c.292 - c.346
Egyptian Monk

Pachomius established the first Christian monastery and introduced rules for monasticism.

Pachomius, of Egyptian origin, joined the Roman army in North Africa. After leaving the military he withdrew into the desert near Thebes in upper Egypt. Soon after he joined a colony of solitaries, and built the first monastic enclosure, replacing the hermits' scattered shelters.

His rule book for monks established the character for the monastic institutions of Eastern and Western civilization.
