70 B.C. - 19 B.C.
Roman Poet

The Romans regarded Virgil as their greatest poet and his 'Aeneid' as their national epic.

Virgil was born in northern Italy, studied in Milan and Naples and went on to Rome, where he was introduced to Octavian, the future emperor Augustus.

His great work 'Aeneid' was modeled on Homer's Odyssey and Iliad. He depicts the evolution of Rome according to a divine plan and suggested that Rome's mission was to bring peace and civilization to the world.
