Greek Philosopher
Aristotle is considered one of the greatest thinkers the world has known. He influenced the orientation and content of all that is termed Western civilization.

Aristotle was born in Stagira, to the north of Greece. He went to Athens to study under Plato for 20 years.
In 342 BC, king Philip of Macedonia called him to Pella to tutor his son, Alexander. After Alexander became king, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his school in the Lyceum. He soon was recognized as Plato's successor and the philosophic leader of the ancient world.

After Alexander conquered Persia, he supported Aristotle's scientific researchers with grants of money. After Alexander died Aristotle withdrew to Chalcis, north of Athens, where he died the following year.
