Utamaro, Kitagawa
c. 1753-1806

Japanese artist whose prints were noted for the striking poses of beautiful women and pairs of lovers. He often showed the women only from the waist up, and drew faces and hands with great elegance.

Toward the end of his life, he turned to exagerations and distortions, which some of his followers carried even farther.
