From the Hebrew word Ashkenaz, meaning Germany. It refers to the Jews of the Germanic lands, many of whom emigrated eastward in the Middle Ages.

Today it represents most of the Jews of Europe, the United States, Russia, Latin America and about half the population of Israel.

The word is used in distinction to Sephardim, who have slightly different customs and rites.
