Kamakura period
1192 - 1333

In 1185, the Minamoto family took over the control over Japan and Minamoto Yoritomo was appointed shogun in the year 1192

Quarrels for supremacy started between the shogun of Kamakura and the Imperial court in Kyoto. In 1221 Kamakura achieved complete control over Japan.

By 1333 the emperor was able to restore imperial power and overthrow the Kamakura shogun.
