Japanese Creation Myth

Since Japan considered itself an empire on the Chinese model, she too needed an official history. Several early efforts to write one resulted in two extant works, the 'Nihon Shoki' and the 'Kojiki'.

Both contain much naive mythology and historical tradition from earlier eras which throw a great deal of light on primitive Japanese beliefs and traditions before they came under the influence of more advanced ideas and institutions from China.

The story in the weblink below is a modern retelling of the creation story from the Kojiki.
