1571 - 1629
King of PERSIA
Shah Abbas was the most important Safavid ruler of Persia. He monopolized the production and trade of silk and used the money to develop his capital, Isfahan, into the most splendid city of the age. The central plaza was seven times the size of the Piazza San Marco in Venice, flanked by the imperial mosque.
The city had over 250 public baths and polo fields with marble posts.
Persia reached a high point in terms of painting and architecture during his reign.
