Jehu was anointed king of Israel by delegates of the prophet Elisha.

Jehu suppressed the cult of Baal, exploited the poor and had to pay tribute to the Assyrians to secure his protection, but this did not prevent a continous war between Jehu and the king of Damascus, after the withdrawal of the Assyrian armies.
