French Revolutionary




Minister of Justice in the revolutionary government in 1792 he organized the defence of France against the Prussians.

He was a member of the Committee of Public Safety but was overthrown by Robespierre, and guillotined.

Porfiro Diaz
1830-1915
President of Mexico





He joined the army fighting against the US (1846-8), in the War of the Reform, and in opposition to the French.

Participated in several revolts and was elected President in 1877. Elected several times Diaz became increasingly dictatorial and ruled Mexico until 1910. In 1911 he was forced to resign and died in exile in Paris.

Dwight D. Eisenhower
1890-1969
US President




Eisenhower was commander of the American forces in Europe and North Africa (1942-3). As Supreme Allied Commander (1943-5) he directed the Allied invasion of Europe.

Later he became the 34th President of the United States (1953-61).

Under his presidency, the Korean War was ended, but the Cold War intensified. At home he ordered federal troops to enforce racial desegregation of US schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
