TANNHAEUSER
c.1208 - c.1275
German Poet

Tannhaeuser, the "Minnesaenger" from Vienna created numerous love-songs. In satirical songs he mocked the superficial court culture of his time.

Tannhaeuser is mostly known as the hero of a popular legend, who lived a life of earthly pleasure, but remorse-fully makes a pilgrimage to Rome.

He is told that his sins will never be forgiven because his pilgrim's staff will never put on leaf again. Shortly after he leaves his discarded staff, the staff begins to put forth green leaves.

The pope sends messengers to search for Tannhaeuser, but he is never seen again.
