Francisco Petrarca (also Petrarch) was born in Arezzo, Italy. He traveled in search for classical manuscripts which he found in many monasteries and became known as the greatest scholar of his age.

He asserted the continuity of classical culture and paved the way for the ideas of the Renaissance.
