Saint DOMINIC
1170 - 1221
Spanish Churchman

Dominic was born in Castile where he joined a religious order.
He accompanied his bishop on a trip to the Albigensian heretics in southern France. In 1206 he began preaching to the heretics and in 1216 received papal approval for a religious order devoted to preaching.

The Order of Friars (Dominicans) was a novel form of religious order with a universal mission of preaching and great emphasis of scholarship.
