Alexander was born in Tralles, Lydia (now Turkey).

He practised and taught in Rome, where he wrote his Twelve Books on Medicine, a major work on pathology and therapy, a treatise which served as a basis for instruction for several centuries in Latin, Greek, and Arabic.
