WA-NI ?
c.350 - c.430

ev. later date Korean Scholar

Wa-ni is a legendary Korean-Chinese scholar who brought Chinese books of Confucian classics to Japan. For that reason Wa-ni is reputed to have introduced the Chinese characters to Japan.

There is no definitive record of when the Japanese began to use Chinese characters - called kanji in Japanese. However, a description in the History Book of the Eastern Han Dynasty in China mentions a 'Seal' given to a Japanese delegation by the emperor in 57 AD.
