c.460 - c.400 BC
Thucydides was the world's first scientific historian.
Thucidides was born in Athens. During the Peloponnesian War, he commanded part of the Athenian fleet. For his failure to relieve the siege of Amphipolis he was exiled for 20 years.
During his exile, he visited all parts of Greece, followed the course of the war, and wrote his history.
He is called the creator of objective historical science,
because he wrote his 'History of the Peloponn-esian War' under the
assumption that the historical process was determined not by the gods,
but by man-made natural causes. As Thucidides told his story, the
dominance that Athens enjoyed was shattered. Sparta won the war.
