Polybius is considered the greatest ancient historian after Thucydides. His work illuminated the rise of Rome and the history of the Mediterranean world.

Polybius was born in Arcadia, Greece. After Rome conquered Macedonia in 168 BC, he was taken as a prisoner to Rome. He helped later Greece obtain favorable terms in a treaty with the Romans.
