SAPPHO c.637-c.572 BC Greek Poetess |
|
Sappho of Lesbos was the greatest poetess of antiquity. Her vivid
emotional manner of writing influenced poets through the ages.
Her themes are very personal - she was able to critically judge
her own ecstasies and pains without losing her emotional force.
On the island of Lesbos Sappho led a circle of young women who were her disciples. Legend has it that Sappho was addicted to Lesbianism, but in the surviving poems there is not a word to connect her or her companions with homosexual practices although she made clear that she was aware of their existence.
