Hugo, Victor

Victor-Marie Hugo was a French poet and novelist who became recognized as a leading figure among French Romantics.

He was born at Besancon, son of a general. He lived in Paris and was elected member to the Academy, but was banished for opposing Louis Napoleon. He went to Guernsey, where he lived for 20 years.

He published his first verse at age 20 and later wrote a series of great novels, the best known of which are 'Notre Dame de Paris' and 'Les Miserables'.
