Blake, William 1757-1827 English engraver, painter & poet
William Blake is famous for his inventive art both in his poetry and in painting and for his prophetic vision.
His best-known works are the two collections of poems,
'Songs of Innocence' and 'Songs of Experience'. Both treat similar subjects from the contrasting views
of innocence and experience. The first collection sees the world through the eyes of a child, while in the
second collection the mature man looks upon the same world, and is conscious of its misery and evil.
Hiernoymus Bosch is one of the most original painters of all time. In his paintings the world seems dominated by demonic powers depicted in grotesque symbolic shapes and actions.
Bosch expressed the fears and beliefs of the
people towards the end of medieval times in an age when
new discoveries had altered old traditions and when
many people feared that the devil was gaining the upper hand in human life.
Botticelli painted mythological and relgious pictures, which are are distinctive for their rhytmic line, delicate color, and poetic feeling. His works include frescoes in the
Sistine Chapel, the Madonna called the 'Magnificat' in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence; the 'Adoration
of the Magi'; and the 'Last Communion of St.Jerome'.
