The Confederates under General R.E.Lee were at
first successful at Bull Run and other battles in
1861 and 1862.
The struggle at Gettisburg was decisive and Lee had to retreat, while General Sherman's 'scorched earth' campaigns through the South caused famine. April 1865 Lee surrendered to General Grant. |
