Moses
Hebrew liberator, leader, lawgiver, and prophet in the 13th/12th cent. BC.

According to the Torah, or Old Testament, Moses was chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and to give them a code of laws by which they could govern themselves in their new home, Palestine.

The Bible story is telling that God revealed Himself to the Hebrews at Mount Sinai. He then called Moses to the top of the Mountain and gave him two stone tablets on which were written the Ten Commandments. When Moses came down from the mountain, he found his people worshipping an idol, and in anger broke the tablets.

After wandering for 40 years in the wilderness Moses led his people to Canaan, but he was doomed never to enter the Promised Land. From Mount Nebo Moses viewed the Promised Land, and then died.
